Promotions Planner: Last of Summer Sun
Start presenting ideas to clients for promotions centered on August observances.
As the summer winds down and before the bittersweet return to the classroom, keep clients engaged with late-season observances that can be leveraged to bring them – and you – more business. Consider promotional products for your local outdoor gear shops, bowling alleys, wineries and others, all of which can benefit from fun holidays in August.
Aug. 1/National Mountain Climbing Day
This observance was established seven years ago when climbers Bobby Matthews and Josh Madigan successfully summited all 46 peaks in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. It marks a perfect opportunity for outdoor-centered businesses to promote this fun activity to both amateurs and seasoned climbers.
PITCH: Propose to gear shops, tour companies and climbing gyms that they brand special-edition giveaways, like carabiners, water bottles and gloves.
Aug. 7/National Lighthouse Day
Established in 1988 by Congress, this day recognizes the historical importance and aesthetic beauty of the nation’s many lighthouses. Historians and educators continue to encourage the ongoing preservation of these unique structures, many of which have been decommissioned but are still open for tours.
PITCH: Suggest to lighthouse operators and maritime history organizations to promote tour specials this day with signage, commemorative T-shirts, headwear and small giveaways like stress relievers and pencils.
Aug. 13/National Bowling Day
Held the second Saturday of August, this day encourages the public to head to the local bowling alley with family and friends and throw a few strikes. According to the U.S. Bowling Congress (USBC), more than 67 million Americans go bowling at least once a year, and more than 1.2 million compete regularly in USBC-certified leagues.
PITCH: Alleys present many sales opportunities for distributors – from barware to branded apparel. Suggest special edition bowling shirts and socks for use with rented footwear, along with glassware and coasters for the bar.
Aug. 18/National Fajita Day
Created in the late 1930s by ranch workers in Texas who needed handheld meals while taking a break, the fajita is a favorite at Mexican and Tex-Mex eateries and food trucks. This tasty item, which includes meat, seafood or vegetables in a small tortilla, is also popular at backyard parties and campgrounds.
PITCH: For this day, propose fajita spice as a giveaway for hungry customers, as well as fajita sets as a raffle item.
Aug. 28/National Red Wine Day
This fun observance just ahead of the autumn season encourages imbibing in a little pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz or any number of red wine varieties. Besides being a popular entertaining beverage, wine has health benefits – it’s full of antioxidants, may lower bad cholesterol and helps to regulate blood sugar.
PITCH: Wineries and restaurants will appreciate signage, drinkware and useful giveaways like bottle openers and totes.
