Promotions Planner: Summer Fun

Start presenting ideas to clients for promotions centered on June observances.

Summer is nearly here, and these June observances will help your clients be ready for it. Consider coral reef education sessions early in the month, followed by gifts for Dad in the middle, eye health toward the end and several events in between. Tie them to promotional products campaigns to help your clients get their brand and message out there.

June 1/World Reef Awareness Day

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the diverse ecosystems of the oceans’ coral reefs aren’t just aesthetically beautiful; they also protect coastlines from erosion, offer habitats for marine organisms, provide nutrients for ocean food chains and bring in tourism money from divers and snorkelers. But they’re at risk due to extreme weather and destruction caused by humans. This day is set aside to raise awareness to the importance of coral reefs and how to preserve them.

PITCH: Suggest that schools and aquariums host educational sessions this day focusing on the world’s coral reefs and host raffles for reef-related giveaways.

June 14/National Bourbon Day

Thanks to the rise of small-batch distilleries, bourbon has seen a significant resurgence in popularity these past few years, and this day is set aside to celebrating its history. Known as the country’s “native spirit,” there are specific requirements for bourbon to be considered such: It must be produced in the U.S. with at least 51% corn, and aged in a brand-new charred white oak barrel for at least two years.

PITCH: Help distilleries and bars celebrate the day with special-edition drinkware and coasters for patrons that can also be sold for additional revenue.

June 19/Father’s Day

It’s Dad’s big day. Suggest to local bars and restaurants that they give out a gift to fathers whose families make reservations for dinner to celebrate. Also consider men’s retail stores that may want to offer specials and discounts for customers.

PITCH: Consider food gifts and useful items like ties or branded socks that businesses can give out to dads this day.

June 21/International Yoga Day

In 2014, the United Nations established June 21 as International Yoga Day, in an effort to recognize the many beneficial effects of this ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. It’s since become popular around the world, with the establishment of yoga studios everywhere as people look for mindfulness, peace and stress relief.

PITCH: Approach your local studios about giveaways for session participants, as well as one-day sales on new memberships. It just might lead to a line of official merch for the business, with items like logoed tank tops, leggings, tote bags and equipment.

June 27/National Sunglasses Day

A fun summer accessory, sunglasses are also critical for protecting eyes from harmful UV rays, which can lead to cataracts in later life. The Vision Council, a nonprofit association that represents members of the eye health industry, established this annual observance to educate on the importance of wearing sunglasses daily.

PITCH: Encourage nearly any retail business, especially those with a focus on the outdoors, to give away logoed sunglasses to customers this day. It’ll provide them with brand impressions while fostering goodwill with patrons.
