Promotions Planner: Shared Causes
October is an ideal time to help organizations promote unity around common objectives.
From the arts, to lifesaving hygiene and health education, October is chock-full of promo-worthy observances that can help related organizations advertise and market their good work.
Oct. 1/International Music Day
Observed since 1978, according to the International Music Council, this day has been set aside to promote music and musical education around the world, acknowledge the many achievements and cultural contributions of musical artists and foster appreciation of different types of music. It’s an ideal opportunity for music schools to promote their services and host special educational opportunities for students.
PITCH: Musical instrument-shaped keytags and power banks are ideal giveaways, along with Bluetooth speakers for raffle winners at special events held this day.
SBHD: Oct. 7/Coffee With a Cop
For the past 10 years, police departments across the country have hosted Coffee With a Cop events, where local police officers host coffee hours with residents to build trust and goodwill.
PITCH: Drinkware would make an ideal giveaway for event attendees, along with coloring books, T-shirts and silicone bracelets showing support.
Oct. 15/Global Handwashing Day
The Global Handwashing Partnership first held this observance in 2008 to encourage proper handwashing techniques around the world and mitigate the spread of germs, bacteria and diseases. It took on new significance during the pandemic. Healthcare facilities, schools and workplaces are all ideal settings for education on the topic.
PITCH: Consider branded liquid hand soap and hand towels as gifts or giveaways, and decals for communal bathrooms with handwashing instructions.
Oct. 23/Pit Bull Awareness Day
Established in 2007 by Jodi Preis of Bless the Bullys, a pit bull rescue and education group in Tennessee, this observance held on the last Saturday of October strives to change negative stereotypes about pit bulls. With more awareness, say organizers, we’ll see fewer pit bulls in shelters, fewer “breed bans” at said shelters and happier dogs and owners.
PITCH: Items that encourage awareness and show support for pit bulls would be perfect for adoption organizations, shelters and pet supply shops observing the day. Think car magnets, headwear, totes and even collars, leashes, bandanas and bowls for new owners.
