Firm Pitches Sunscreen At Job Sites

A twist on safety campaigns.

A company called Sun Block at Work (www.sunblockatwork.com) is creating a new market niche in safety by offering industrial sunblock to workers in all varieties of outdoor jobs - from landscapers, to construction workers to professional athletes. "Sunscreen should be part of every outdoor professional’s personal protective equipment,” says Brian Van Dam, company president and co-founder.

UV exposure also affects people who spent a great deal of time driving vehicles for a living, and even the pilots flying cargo and commercial airplanes, according to Van Dam. “Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer reported each year in the United States, with over 3.5 million skin cancers diagnosed in over two million people each year, more than all other cancers combined,” he says. The good news? It’s also the most preventable."

Formulated by dermatologists, Sun Block at Work protects against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, is all natural, and doesn’t leave an oily film which is important to workers that handle tools, paperwork and equipment. The company provides all natural sun block, UV lip protection and sun safety training to educate companies about the risks of sun exposure all year round, and to demonstrate how easy it is to protect themselves.

“Wearing long sleeves doesn’t protect against UV exposure, and skin color doesn’t determine whether or not you’re more at risk,” says Van Dam. “It’s the UV exposure that causes the problems, not the sunburn itself. What if a dermatologist tells employees they can no longer work outdoors? Companies are losing good employees. Protecting employees from this health risk will also help manage a company’s healthcare costs.”

Many end-buyer clients create a Sunblock at Work station and place a sunscreen container where the majority of employees gather or pass in the morning. “Companies that are providing Sun Block at Work to their employees say it’s a great way to show them how much we care about their health and safety,” Van Dam says. “We have some corporations and public school systems that have asked us to add their logos to ours on the product. They want their employees to know they’re taking an active role in providing safety products.”
