Power Banks Recalled After House Fire
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in conjunction with Health Canada, has issued an official recall for universal rechargeable power banks that pose a fire risk.
The lithium ion battery inside each power bank, made in China and imported into the U.S. by Long Island City, NY-based Daniel M. Friedman & Associates, a division of Steven Madden, Ltd., and into Canada by Mississauga, ON-based TJX Canada, can overheat and start a fire.
Daniel M. Friedman & Associates has received three reports of the power banks overheating in the U.S., including one report of a house fire that caused $150,000 in property damage. No incidents have yet been reported in Canada. About 170,500 were sold in the U.S. and 6,900 in Canada.
The Betsey Johnson-branded power banks come more than 20 different colors and shapes, including a llama, rainbow, narwhal and milkshake. They were sold at Burlington, Kohl’s, Ross and other retail stores in the U.S. between November 2016 and January 2019 for about $25. In Canada, they were sold at Winners, Marshalls and HomeSense stores between October 2016 and June 2017. A complete list of the affected products in Canada can be found here.
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled power banks and contact Daniel M. Friedman & Associates to arrange to return the product for a full refund,” stated the CPSC in its official recall. Similarly, Health Canada is asking Canadian consumers to stop using the product right away and return it to any Winners, Marshalls or HomeSense store for a full refund.
Daniel M. Friedman can be contacted at (855) 706-6500 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday or at info@betseyjohnson.com. TJX Canada can be contacted at (800) 646-9466 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
