Last April in Wearables, I wrote about Quell, an FDA-cleared medical wearable from NeuroMetrix Inc. that was set to launch in June 2014. The $249 device, according to Alyssa Fenglio, marketing director fo NeuroMetrix “hacks the brain” to help relieve pain. Worn around the calf, the band uses Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), small electrical impulses that release the body’s natural opiates and help provide relief for many people with chronic pain.

I caught up with the makers of the product earlier this month at CES 2016 in Las Vegas and got a quick update on Quell. Since the product’s launch, the company has seen significant growth, with revenue jumping more than 50% from Q2 to Q3 last year, Fenoglio says. A clinical test found that 81% of users saw a decrease in their chronic pain, she notes.

Thanks to the overwhelming popularity, NeuroMetrix is set to launch an updated version of Quell in March. Among the upgrades are a 25% extension to battery life, the ability to control the device through the mobile app and customizable pain relief options. The new app also features sophisticated sleep monitoring technology that analyzes sleep duration, body position and movement. Users can track their pain therapy and sleep quality over time, ranging from one day to three months. “These are insights that are important to people with chronic pain,” Fenoglio says.
