Make a Splash With the Mermaid Trend
End-buyers looking for a touch of whimsy can hitch a ride on a growing fad among celebrities and influencers.
This spring, style inspiration can be found “under the sea.”
Ahead of the highly anticipated live-action remake of the classic movie The Little Mermaid, to be released this May, the playful, whimsical mermaid look is cropping up in high fashion, on celebrities and at retail.
“Mermaidcore” – looks that evoke the folkloric beings and their aquatic environment – was everywhere during recent awards ceremonies and film premiers, with celebrities like Heidi Klum, Julia Garner, Kaia Gerber, Jodie Turner-Smith and Jessica Chastain donning formalwear that paid homage to mermaids.
On social media, influencers show off mermaid-inspired outfits and accessories, as well as glossy makeup routines (a wet, just-surfaced-from-the-waves look also called “shower makeup”) and colorful balayage hair treatment a la Ariel.

This versatile trend works for both kids and kids-at-heart as well as a variety of markets; the promo industry has a number of mermaid-inspired imprintable items for end-buyers’ upcoming playful campaigns.
1. Salons & Spas
Local beauty businesses can sell branded cosmetic bags, and/or give them out to loyal customers after a certain number of appointments kept.
2. Corporate Gifting
Instead of a typical glossy ceramic mug, companies can take a different tack with drinkware in a variety of colors and textures, including those that evoke mermaid tails.
3. Cruise Ship & Resort Shops
Mermaid-print towels are a perfect fit for retail shops at resorts and on ships, as a useful item for on-site pools and beach excursions.
4. Pool Parties
Themed pool accessories are ideal for birthday parties, summer celebrations or even impromptu backyard get-togethers with friends.
5. Financial Services
Encourage financial industry clients to have fun with upcoming campaigns – suggest mermaid-inspired shimmery and pearlescent patterns on hard goods.
6. New Student Orientation
Schools, colleges and universities can welcome incoming students with fun, eye-catching bags that go beyond a typical backpack.
7. Community Events
Suggest to local businesses participating in family-friendly events that they sell themed plush items. As a bonus, encourage them to give a portion of the proceeds to ocean conservation organizations.
