Hot New Products From CES 2018​

CES, the massive consumer tech trade show, kicked off in Las Vegas this week, with thousands of tech companies lining up to show off their latest gadgets and wildest innovations. “CES has truly become a showcase for the entire continuum of consumer technology,” says Steve Koenig, senior director of market research at the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the trade organization that hosts the event.

The CTA projects that the U.S. consumer tech industry will reach a record high $351 billion this year. Among the major categories expected to see growth are wearable tech, smart speakers like the Amazon Echo, virtual reality, drones and smart home products.

1. UV Sense from L’Oréal

Beauty company L’Oréal created a battery-free electronic sensor, that sticks to your thumbnail and measures exposure to the sun. “Beauty trends show that adoption of wearable nail art is on the rise, with a more than 65% increase in nail art trends over the last five years,” says Guive Balooch, global vice president of the company’s technology incubator. “Our innovation taps into this growing trend, while illustrating our deep commitment to sun safe behavior and protection.”


2. Sgnl from Innomdle Lab

Sgnl is a smart watchstrap that allows the wearer to take phone calls by placing a fingertip to their ear. Sgnl actually uses the human hand as a medium for transmitting sound. The strap can be used with smartwatches like the Apple Watch or Samsung Galaxy Gear, but also with regular wristwatches. It connects to a user’s smartphone via Bluetooth and activates automatically when the phone receives or makes a call. The Sgnl can also monitor physical activity and give call reminders.


3. Siren socks powered by Neurofabric

Siren Diabetic Socks have miniature temperature sensors embedded into the fabric. They detect inflammation to help people with diabetes prevent ulcers and other foot injuries. The socks are machine-washable and last for about six months.


4. Reliefband 2.0

The Reliefband is a drug-free method of treating the nausea that stems from motion sickness, morning sickness, chemotherapy and virtual reality activities. The wristband emits pulses to modulate the median nerve, using neural pathways to block the waves of nausea produced by the stomach. A fully charged battery lasts about 17 hours.


5. Hip’Air from Helite

The Hip’Air is a smart belt for seniors that inflates airbags over the hips when a fall is detected by the electronic system. According to maker Helite, the belt reduces impact forces by up to 90%. Using complex algorithms, the Hip’Air can detect a fall in about .2 seconds and deploy the airbags in about .08 seconds.
