Dispatches From the Work-From-Home Front, Week 4

The ASI team shares the shows they’re binge watching and hobbies they’ve taken up while sheltering at home.

It’s been nearly a month since ASI employees transitioned to working from home, and each week, we’ve been documenting the challenges we’ve overcome and insights we’ve gained during this unprecedented time. This time around, however, we’re switching gears to focus on how we’ve been occupying ourselves during our off time. Read on for a list of the most binge-able shows (Tiger King, anyone?) and other delicacies.

Christopher Ruvo, Executive Editor, Counselor

What I’m Bingeing: Locke & Key on Netflix – magical realism, Massachusetts witchery, family curses and other dimensional-stuff at its finest. And Black Spot, also a Netflix ditty. It’s in French, so the dubbed English can make it a little corny at times, but the stories are great – dark and mysterious, all tied up with an ancient forest, weird murders, a Celtic god and a town that makes Stephen King’s Maine look welcoming and well-adjusted.

My Hobby: My wife and I have started doing Zumba together. Stop laughing. We haven’t gotten the ’80s hair metal-style neon spandex outfits yet, but stay tuned. We’re terrified of the one online lady instructor because she looks like she can kill you with her pinky, but that’s definitely kept us motivated. Upside: My glutes feel perky. (Sorry ... too much?)

Monica Guzman, Senior Designer

What I’m Bingeing: We just watched McMillions on HBO (HBO is free right now, by the way). It’s about the McDonald’s Monopoly game scam … very interesting! I used to LOVE that game and ate way too many burgers and fries back in the day trying to win it.

My Hobby: Since being home, I’ve reinvested time into taking nutrition school courses, and I’ve rearranged almost every room in my house.

Joan Chaykin, Managing Editor

Christmas poinsettia

Joan’s Christmas poinsettia is still hanging in there.

What I’m Bingeing: To cut back on watching distressing news, I’ve been bingeing Lifetime movies. They all have similar plots – murderous moms, delusional daughters, sociopathic sons, deadly dads. Great family fun.

My Hobby: It’s not really a hobby, but I’ve been taking better care of my indoor plants, which reminds me that all the poor plants back at the office are in dire need of water.

Hillary Glen, Art Director

Jen with brownies

Homemade black bean brownies can’t be beat.

What I’m Bingeing: We finished the new season of Ozark and also discovered Trailer Park Boys on Netflix, which is hilarious and provides a good laugh during these crazy times.

My Hobby: I love baking, and my stepdaughter, Jenna, made homemade black bean brownies with fudge frosting, so things are good in the Glen house.

Emma O’Sullivan, Manager of Branded Content

Video game characters

Emma and Casey living their best virtual lives.

What I’m Bingeing: Casey Vanatta (digital designer at ASI) and I have been very busy playing Animal Crossing – New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch. (If you play, give us those friend codes!)

My Hobby: Same as above – Animal Crossing is our life now.

Kim Calkins, Executive Assistant

plants

Kim shows off her green thumb.

What I’m Bingeing: I find that I’ve been searching out funny shows and comedians – Sebastian Maniscalco, for one.

My Hobby: I have a cross-stitch project that’s been sitting for a while that I’m going to attempt to continue and complete. I also started some plants – herbs, peppers, tomatoes and flowers – from seeds.

Rebecca Young, Senior Web Designer

family walk

Rebecca and her family explore the great outdoors.

What I’m Bingeing: My kids have been bingeing Disney+ if that counts. We’ve watched Frozen II about 12 times, and our new obsession is Onward.

My Hobby: Drinking wine (I guess this could have applied for the previous question.) Just kidding. Family walks! We’ve always enjoyed the outdoors, but we’ve recently found an appreciation for exploring our little neighborhood and the woods in our backyard.

Rick Angeloni, Design Director

What I’m Bingeing: Having my Poli-Sci son home from school got me watching West Wing, which I never watched in its day. Along the same lines we’re re-watching Veep because it’s SO incredibly biting and hilarious. I can’t believe this kid wants to go to Washington!

My Hobby: No new hobbies – just putting more and more time into the honey-do list around the house. Gutters, weeds, planting and power washing. I love it for the sense of accomplishment and extra outdoor hours.

Elizabeth Italia, Executive Director, Marketing Content

cat yoga

Eggroll likes to join in shavasana for a bit longer than Elizabeth does.

What I’m Bingeing: The same content I always binge – true crime docs on ID and Oxygen.

My Hobby: Yoga! I’m by no means good at it, but I’m doing my best to incorporate it into my workout schedule every few days. I figure the tightness in my muscles from not being up and around so much can be loosened up.

Stephanie Turner-Scott, Director, Corporate Marketing

What I’m Bingeing: We’ve been watching Netflix shows like Ozark, Money Heist, and ordering movies like The Invisible Man and Just Mercy.

My Hobby: Home improvement projects. I’ve changed about 15 switch plates and repainted baseboards and window trim. When your spouse is a general contractor, you’d be amazed how some minor touches can enhance your home. I’ve also become quite masterful with the power washer.

Dawn Shurmaitis, Public Relations & Corporate Communications Director

Dawn with a water pump

Dawn wrestles with a recalcitrant water pump.

What I’m Bingeing: Swinging wildly, depending on current freak-out level, between hard news, comedy and mysteries: CNN and ABC Nightly News, classic/silly sitcom reruns like Two and a Half Men, FX’s Better Things, Netflix’s The Stranger and Unbelievable, along with sweet/smart series like Sex Education (seriously, don’t let the title fool you – it’s like an English Breakfast Club)  and Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

My Hobby: It’s not as much a hobby as it is a current obsession: trying to fix the motor in a pretty new outdoor water pump. Since I can’t call a repair person, I’ve been trying everything. Cleaned it. Changed the power cord. Stared at it intently. Today, I plan to kick it – hard! – and see if that gets it moving. I’m determined not to quit and just buy a new one. Suggestions welcome.

Nathaniel Kucsma, Executive Director, Research and Corporate Marketing

Ciabatta

Nate shows off some homemade ciabatta bread.

What I’m Bingeing: On one particularly rainy weekend, I watched the entire Harry Potter movie series from Sorcerer’s Stone through Deathly Hallows 2 – and Tiger King, just like everyone else.

My Hobby: Definitely baking bread and cooking. I’ve always loved it, but being home makes bread baking possible because it needs attention in short, little bursts throughout the day.

Mandy Salay, Senior Web Designer

Puzzle

Mandy’s latest conquest: 1,500 pieces of Disney villains.

What I’m Bingeing: Schitt’s Creek! The series finale was on April 7, so if anyone hasn’t seen it yet, now’s a good time to binge it. Or restart it from the beginning.

My Hobby: Jigsaw puzzles. I’ve become a puzzlin’ machine.

Holly Singletary, Digital Content Strategist

Holly

Holly takes her niece and nephew on a car karaoke adventure.

What I’m Bingeing: The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere, Dead to Me, Modern Love, The Good Fight. I’m searching for my next binge-watch now, but I seriously need to pick up a book.

My Hobby: As a treat (and as an escape plan to get away from their daddy), I take my niece and nephew on weekly karaoke/dance sessions in the car. We blast Disney radio, and I even let them eat their dinner in my car as we look at flowers and sunsets. They love it since they’re breaking multiple rules in the process.

Kerry Boderman, Education Director

What I’m Bingeing: Tiger King, of course, The Handmaid’s Tale and Ozark, season three!

My Hobby: I made a big batch of garlic oyster crackers, which I’ve never made before in my life, but my best friend’s mom made them all the time when I was a kid, and I was addicted to them back then. They taste just like I remembered, but I actually tripled the amount of garlic salt listed in the original recipe (which is in my friend’s little-girl handwriting, on a piece of notepaper with an upside-down Sandra Boynton elephant cartoon on it).
