Perfecting faux-vintage decoration with a washed-out ivy vibe is an involved process, but done well, the results can be stunning.
In a collaboration with Fruit of the Loom’s (asi/84257) JERZEES brand, AMB3R (asi/590243) recently created a prep-focused premium collection, featuring a handful of original designs that could be mixed and matched across a mix of products.
“We are so stoked on the way it came together,” says AMB3R CEO Jeremy Picker, adding that the custom decoration process helped transform off-the-shelf blanks into a cohesive, retail-worthy collection. The looks will be part of Lakewood, CO-based AMB3R’s forthcoming apparel line Denco Heritage Brand.
Consider Picker’s three tips to help create the perfect vintage apparel decoration:
1. Study vintage goods to stay authentic.
Whether you comb through Pinterest or go to the thrift store, see what makes an old garment unique. Adding a vintage filter in the artwork isn’t enough. Nothing is uniform and exact. Knowing how things might have been produced back in the day can help you create a design that looks like it’s been washed hundreds of times.
2. Know your decoration techniques.
Understanding all of the different decoration techniques out there and how they can work together is step one in conceptualizing, designing and producing a multimedia piece.
“Our development phase is where the magic starts to happen,” Picker explains. The vintage collection created in collaboration with JERZEES integrated appliqué, matte sewing thread, unique stitching and a faded screen print – working together in service of a specific vision.
3. Start with the end in mind.
It’s imperative to have a budget from the beginning and stick to it. Since creating the perfect T-shirt is a balance between choosing the right garment, design and decoration, having an idea of how much a client is willing to spend or the future sales price if you’re developing your own clothing line will help you develop something that’s stunning but still within budget.
