Promotions Planner: Awareness in Action

Start presenting ideas to clients for promotional campaigns centered around October observances.

With Halloween at new heights for celebration – and spending – it’s easy to let spooky season overshadow sales strategies for the fall, especially October. But that’s far from the only holiday worth celebrating in October – from observances recognizing the contributions of farmers and architects to bringing awareness to the importance of media literacy, there are plenty of options for October holidays to build fall promo campaigns around. Here are a few suggestions.

Oct. 6: World Architecture Day

World Architecture Day was created by the International Union of Architects in 1985 and is celebrated on the first Monday in October each year, in alignment with United Nations World Habitat Day to emphasize the importance of global urban development.

PITCH: The International Union of Architects hasn’t announced this year’s theme yet, but last year’s was focused on the next generation – suggest that architecture firms use this observance to invest in their future with employee appreciation initiatives and a visit to a local college’s job fair.

Oct. 12: National Farmers Day

The number of farms in the United States has declined over the past several decades, but the country is still home to nearly 2 million farms, covering nearly 900 million acres of land. The farmers who man that agricultural production are essential to the U.S. food supply – and deserve to be celebrated on National Farmers Day.

PITCH: Offer extra promotional items at local farmers markets or fall festivals to help emphasize the important contributions of farmers.

Oct. 16: International Credit Union Day

Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit organizations that provide finance, banking and loan services to millions of members worldwide. This year’s International Credit Union Day on October 16 focuses on the theme of cooperation – perfect for giveaways or promo campaigns focused on partnerships and appreciation.

PITCH: Credit unions can thank members for their business with appropriately themed promo like budget planners or checkbook covers.

Oct. 31: Girl Scout Founders Day

In addition to Halloween, October 31 is also Founders Day for the Girl Scouts – the birthday of the organization’s founder Juliette Gordon Low, who was born in 1860 in Savannah, GA. Troops typically gather to learn about Juliette’s life, participate in service projects and reflect on the history and meaning of the Girl Scouts.

PITCH: Beyond the obvious potential for merch for the Girl Scouts themselves, Founders Day is an opportunity for any local business interested in women’s empowerment to get involved – think nonprofits providing apparel for a younger troop’s day of service or finance companies offering investment education for high school Scouts.

Oct. 24-31: Global Media & Information Literacy Week

The emergence of increasingly advanced AI technology over the past few years has made media and information literacy more important than ever – making this observance, highlighting the power of media literacy in education, particularly impactful in 2025.

PITCH: Public libraries and schools catering to students of all ages can offer media literacy programming during the last week of October, finishing with an easy giveaway of custom stickers with key takeaways – perhaps something spooky-themed?
