Nancy Schmidt

On May 1, Nancy Schmidt was announced as the CEO of AIA. As if taking over the 10th largest distributor in the promo industry wasn’t hard enough, it came as businesses all over the world were reeling from the coronavirus pandemic.

Taking the wheel of a ship in the middle of a raging storm is a monumental challenge. Many might have buckled. Schmidt smiled, called the challenge an exciting opportunity, and proceeded to lead with a cool head and clear vision – all key reasons she debuts inside the top 30 on this year’s list. “I’m focused on helping our owners build efficient and profitable businesses and on continuing our team-driven leadership model to provide a strong infrastructure to execute the services the AIA community values most,” says Schmidt, a CPA who’s served in roles that include CFO since joining AIA in 2018. She replaced former CEO Matt Gresge.

In a few short months leading AIA, Schmidt has spearheaded a number of initiatives, from helping its members sell PPE, home office essentials and workplace sanitation supplies (through a partnership with AIA-owned OfficeZilla) to leading the Owner Success team as it allowed AIA distributors to analyze their business and identify growth opportunities. The approach has borne fruit. “In the last six months, we welcomed seven new owners,” says Schmidt. “Together, these distributors will bring $9.3 million in projected total contract sales to AIA.”

For sure, Schmidt’s full focus is on the success of AIA distributors. “We’ve come together for each other,” she says, “during these difficult times.”

Pandemic Profile

What one hobby or activity has kept you sane during the pandemic?
NS: We welcomed a puppy to the family, and it’s provided a focal point for us as we bond, train and play together.

What did you miss the most during the shutdowns?
NS: I miss social gatherings and athletic events. I have four boys and we spend many nights and weekends together at their games.

Outside of the people in your house, who did you speak to the most during the shutdowns?
NS: I video call my mom frequently, who moved into assisted living. I miss visiting her in person, but she’s able to use FaceTime and we enjoy our conversations about books and my children.
