SPF, EXPLAINED: What Is the Right Amount for Your Client?

First things first: What is SPF exactly and how does it work? SPF stands for Sun Protectant Factor. It provides a measurement of how long the sun's UVA and UVB rays will take to burn skin. For example, someone wearing SPF 30 sunscreen could stay in the sun 30X longer without getting burned than someone with no sunscreen on at all. Basically, the higher the SPF, the higher the sun protection.

As for how much SPF your clients need? That will depend on the end-use. In general, SPF 15 is satisfactory for short periods in the sun, but SPF 30 is recommended for longer exposure. That said, be sure to ask your clients about how they anticipate consumers using their sunscreen. If your end-user audience is comprised of long-distance marathon runners, for example, you might want to opt for even more SPF to keep consumers protected from heavy sun exposure.
