Contending With Stress in Sales
Selling is a tough gig, even in a traditionally fun industry like promo.
According to recent data from ASI Research, the number of distributor salespeople who report being “very satisfied” with their jobs has fallen steadily over the past five years, from 61% in 2018 to 41% in 2023. Reps say there are a number of factors at play, including high-maintenance clients, frequent turnover at accounts, long hours, recent layoffs in industries like tech, and communication breakdowns during the order process.
At the same time, sales can be very rewarding, says Joy Rains, a Maryland-based speaker, author and expert in sales and mindfulness.
“Sales can be really stressful for some people, but other people might love that stress,” she says. “They might thrive on it. It’s important for companies to acknowledge that yes, this can be stressful. And if it is stressful for you, let’s look at some of the ways to mitigate that stress.”
In this episode of Promo Insiders, Rains walks through daily mindfulness habits and thought-pattern changes that can help to relieve anxiety and improve job performance over time.
