Convergence Corner: Katie Grimes Delivers Custom-Made Magic
The account executive from MadeToOrder walks through a custom order that required a bit of imagination.
Good things can happen when you say yes to opportunities. Katie Grimes, account executive for MadeToOrder (asi/259540), a Counselor Best Place to Work, was visiting one of her clients at their headquarters, where they were hosting a holiday sneak peek conference show. She was chatting with someone from the cybersecurity department and heard about their new mascot – a unicorn. Soon, the conversation went to them wanting a custom bobblehead of the unicorn, as well as custom packaging.
“I’m going, ‘All right, I’m just going to say yes and we’ll figure out the details later,’” Grimes says.
Soon after the event, they received a PNG image of the unicorn, but in order to make a 3-D model, Grimes reached out to some of her supplier partners and asked about designs, molds, bases, and eventually everything fell into place.
“I said, ‘I have a feeling we can do this, so tell me how we can get this done,’” Grimes says. “Long story short, we ended up having to redraw the PNG with my supplier partners. They figured out a way to encompass it as a 3-D mold and figured out where to cut the unicorn itself so it actually bobbled.”
The only challenge was designing a base large enough to place a logo, but they made it work, along with a custom box to complete the collectible look of a valuable action figure – all on a tight turnaround. But, as when she started, Grimes said yes.
“They came to me and said, ‘Can we do a box?’” Grimes says. “I said, ‘yesterday maybe, but let’s try.’ We came up with a full-color box with a custom window, and the scheme of it was kind of a landscape that this unicorn was living in, with their branding on top of the box.”
It was fitting that the focus of a campaign like this – all custom, all designed to be one of a kind – centered around a unicorn. But, unlike a unicorn, the product and the results were very real. That didn’t mean it didn’t require a bit of magic from Grimes and her team.
