Atlantis Headwear Shares Life Cycle Assessments for Select Styles
The sustainable Italian supplier conducted the thorough, year-long studies as part of efforts to lower its carbon footprint.
Sustainable Italian brand Atlantis Headwear (asi/37380) says it’s working on reducing its carbon footprint – starting off the process by conducting thorough life cycle assessments (LCA) of products.
The LCA methodology is an internationally recognized, standardized examination of a product’s life cycle, from sourcing materials to final disposal. The assessments include an analysis of a product’s carbon footprint.
“At Atlantis Headwear, sustainability is more than a goal – it’s a guiding principle,” said Vice President Federico Pasini. “Implementing the LCA method was a pivotal step in our unwavering commitment to a greener future.”
Starting with a select group of styles, Atlantis Headwear conducted a year-long, tailored LCA that the company said involved thorough evaluations, data collection and close collaboration with its supply chain. Upon completion of the study in 2022, Atlantis received carbon footprint quantification of the initial test group of products. The LCA method enabled Atlantis to identify opportunities to improve environmental performance at each stage of the product life cycle, and provided criteria to ensure more responsible purchasing and production choices.
The results of the LCA study, which was third-party certified in accordance with ISO 14067:2018 standards, highlighted how material selection, along with energy use along the supply chain, are the most important elements in reducing emissions, according to Atlantis. The assessment found that its 100% recycled polyester beanie has a 67% smaller carbon footprint than a 100% acrylic version. And an organic cotton cap has an 18% smaller carbon footprint. To make the calculation, Atlantis said it considered a product from resource extraction to item distribution. The use of the product was not included in the assessment.
Atlantis says it plans to further analyze a broader range of its products using the LCA methodology.
Founded in 1995, Atlantis Headwear entered the North American market in 2021 when the company partnered with Top 40 promotional products supplier Sportsman Cap & Bag (asi/88877) and its distributors to offer blank caps. Last year, the company partnered with Caps Direct (asi/43804) to offer custom-decorated headwear, working through a shared factory with Sportsman.
