Cimpress Releases First ESG Report
The Top 40 distributor reported a 33% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions compared to fiscal year 2019.
Cimpress (asi/162149) shared its sustainability progress – and set some ambitious goals – in its first environmental, social and governance (ESG) report, released for fiscal year 2022.
One highlight: The Top 40 promotional products distributor – parent company of Vistaprint and former Top 40 firm National Pen – reported a 33% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from fiscal year 2019 levels. The reduction was 49% compared to fiscal year 2016 levels.
Cimpress attributed the accomplishment to investments in energy efficiency, improved lighting and HVAC efficiency, transitioning to more energy-efficient printing presses, and onsite solar installations, as well as renewable energy procurement.
In addition to covering greenhouse gas emissions, the report evaluates ESG risks and opportunities, as well as Cimpress’ actions and progress toward commitments to things like responsible forestry; reducing and improving the use of plastics; and diversity, equity and inclusion.
“Cimpress has a longstanding history of integrating ESG principles within our corporate decisions and operations,” said Robert Keane, Cimpress’ founder, chairman and CEO. “The report reflects years of progress toward our ideals as we strive to build a transformational and enduring business institution that drives long-term value for all our constituents: customers, team members, long-term investors and society.”
Keane added that he’s “excited for the innovation, dedication, opportunity and support” Cimpress will provide as it works toward its ESG goals.
According to Cimpress, the inaugural report was informed by best practices and frameworks including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB).
The report noted that 86% of the wood fiber products produced at Cimpress facilities are made from FSC-certified material. By 2025, the distributor aims to have 100% of such products made from FSC-certified material and 95% of wood fiber packaging used in its facilities made from either FSC-certified material or containing the “highest feasible amount” of post-consumer waste.
By 2025, Cimpress aims to eliminate 100% of PVC and polystyrene in packaging and products; transition 100% of nonreusable packaging to recyclable and/or compostable materials; increase the recycled content in plastic products by 20% against a fiscal year 2020 baseline; and decrease the use of virgin plastic content in packaging by at least 20% through a combination of plastic elimination and increased recycled content.
Cimpress also set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by fiscal year 2040, encompassing its entire greenhouse gas inventory, and to achieve a 53% reduction in emissions by fiscal year 2030, compared to a 2019 baseline.
