“Sustainability isn’t a checkbox, it’s a mindset,” Whitestone CEO Joseph Sommer, Counselor’s 2024 Distributor Entrepreneur of the Year, wrote in a LinkedIn post. “It’s the belief that small steps taken daily can lead to significant impact. This Bronze rating is a nod that we’re moving in the right direction.”

EcoVadis – a business sustainability certification platform that’s gained traction in promo in recent years – has surveyed more than 150,000 companies globally so far in four key areas: environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. The company awards two types of badges and four different medals ranging from Bronze to Platinum – the latter a recognition awarded to the top 1% of assessed companies.

Last year, New York City-based Whitestone received a “Committed” badge from EcoVadis; its Bronze certification indicates further progress in its sustainability efforts, including its first-ever impact report released in May 2025, a carbon footprint assessment, energy audits to lower the environmental impact of remote workers, and sourcing from responsible suppliers.

Collectively, Whitestone groups its efforts under what it calls RISE by Whitestone (Responsible Impact & Sustainable Excellence).

More than half of Whitestone’s total supplier spend is with Tier 1 firms, a measure given to the company’s partners based on sustainability practices, third-party certifications and ethical standards. The company also fully offset its 2023 and 2024 emissions by partnering with Bonneville Environmental Foundation and joined 1% for the Planet, a nonprofit whose members commit to donating at least 1% of annual sales to environmental organizations.

EcoVadis ratings have become increasingly coveted in the promo industry – among the firms recognized by the platform this year are Charles River Apparel (asi/44620), Pro Towels (asi/79750), Merchology (asi/169169), Chameleon Like (asi/44558) and Counselor Top 40 supplier HPG (asi/61966).
