In a simple social media post and a couple of emails two months ago, I offered to have ASI match every dollar donated by employees and our distributor and supplier members to their local food banks or to Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the country, which serves over 60,000 food pantries and 200 food banks.
Boy, did they deliver. Between donations and the match, we’ve raised over $100,000 for food banks and pantries everywhere, adding up to about 1,000,000 meals for the people who need it most.
The industry-wide fund drive began on May 12, with everyone who made cash contributions to their local food banks sending us their receipts so we could tally it all up and make one large matching donation to Feeding America.
According to the national nonprofit, through its partnerships, the organization rescues food before it’s wasted. As a result, every dollar donated to Feeding America helps secure and distribute through its nationwide network of food banks at least 12 pounds of food – the equivalent of 10 meals – to people facing hunger.
I’m so proud of the generosity of so many to help those who are hungry, especially in this uncertain time. ASI Chairman Norman Cohn may have said it best: “There have been many days I have been proud of our company and our industry. Today was one of the most proud days. With our family and ASI team donation and industry matching, we actually provided 1,000,000 meals (count the zeros –this isn’t a typographical error!) to help feed the hungry.”
