Here’s what I love most about this industry: Its people. When the call went out to help those whose lives were upended by devastating hurricanes, you responded in full force, sending cash, clothes, bandages, baby wipes, rubber gloves and laundry detergent, water, coolers and even doggie rain jackets, organizing school supply fundraisers and even driving trucks packed with much-needed items to faraway states.
You cared.
To do our part, ASI organized two fundraisers to help people in areas impacted the most, pledging $10,000 to match cash contributions for those in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, a continuation of a $25,000 matching fund drive for Texas and the Gulf.
To date, thanks to your generous donations, we’ve raised a total of nearly $97,000. We’re still collecting, so if you haven’t given yet, you still can – it will take months, if not years, to restore shattered lives, rebuild and restock everything the storms blew away or destroyed.

- Save the Children Hurricane Maria Children’s Relief Fund, dedicated to helping children and families in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic with emergency assistance. (Note: 10% of funds donated to specific emergencies go to the organization’s Children’s Emergency Fund.)
We were certainly saddened by the devastation across the entire path of the hurricanes, and our relief contributions are meant to help as many as possible, which is why we chose the Red Cross as one of the vetted organizations we’re supporting (along with the Houston Food Bank and the Food Bank of Corpus Christi).
From aiding American servicemen in Europe during WW2 to organizing blood drives in Las Vegas after the horrific mass shooting, the American Red Cross has provided routine and emergency care for 130 years. In the past five weeks alone, the ARC has been on the ground helping people devastated by three historic, back-to-back hurricanes: Harvey, Irma and Maria.
So far, the Red Cross has served more than 5.2 million meals and snacks, and provided more than 2.3 million relief items to people from Texas and Florida to the Caribbean and Puerto Rico, where many residents remain without power, food and water.
No organization is perfect – or without criticism. But according to “Charity Navigator,” an independent watchdog group founded in 2001, the Red Cross earns three of four stars.
