In the epic 1968 science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, a supercomputer named HAL goes on a murderous rampage aboard a spaceship and tries to take over a mission to Jupiter. HAL, who is one of the earliest cinematic incarnations of artificial intelligence, struck fear in the hearts of millions with the prospect of what the future could hold if technology isn’t kept in check.
More than 50 years later, that sentiment is still strong.
“According to a recent study, 55% of respondents are more scared of artificial intelligence than they are open to using it,” said Marji J. Sherman, CEO/chief strategist of Sherman Social.
