Gemline Execs Delve Into Product-Level Carbon Emissions Tracking Initiative
Frank Carpenito, CEO and president of the Counselor Top 40 supplier, and Tim Behling, vice president of supply chain and sustainability, discuss the importance of getting a handle on Scope 3 emissions
Back in June, Counselor Top 40 supplier Gemline (asi/56070) announced that it was releasing product-level carbon footprint data for 100 items in its portfolio, with plans to expand that number throughout the summer. The move, which the Lawrence, MA-based firm said took about a year to implement, marked a significant advancement in its efforts to measure and mitigate Scope 3 emissions.
In this episode of Promo Insiders, ASI Media’s Theresa Hegel chats with Gemline President and CEO Frank Carpenito, a member of Counselor’s Power 50 list of the most influential people in promo, and Tim Behling, vice president of supply chain and sustainability, about the progress they’ve made in their emissions-tracking efforts and why getting a handle on Scope 3 emissions is critical for the promotional products industry.
“When we looked at our Scope 3 in 2023, we realized that purchased goods and services was the largest portion and figured, if we’re going to get our hands around Scope 3, we really need to get our hands around purchased goods and services,” Behling says. “It’s definitely been a journey for us.”
By September, Behling notes, Gemline expects to include emissions data published for about 300 of its products, and by the end of the year, as much as 40% of Gemline products – as well as some from brand partners – will have carbon footprint tracking.
