Out of Sorrow, Hope for Others

Saturday afternoon, very sadly, I’ll be attending a memorial service for one of my closest friends, who passed away on Monday after a 13-month fight with ovarian cancer. Leslie Kuenne was a warrior in the fight, and won many battles, but ultimately not the final one.
For those who didn’t know Leslie, who was only 58, I wish you had. She was welcoming, charming, caring, loyal, graceful, inquisitive, understanding and thoughtful. She was a great mother, wife, friend, confidant, artist and a generous member of my community.
The reason I’m letting you know about Leslie, and sharing something so personal, is because she spent several months imploring people to learn the symptoms of ovarian cancer, which is most often detected in final stages with little hope of lasting treatment and survival. It causes more deaths each year than any other gynecological cancer in the United States.

Learn the symptoms for yourself and for those you love.
Many of us have been touched by cancer and other terrible diseases, either directly or because of the pain of friends and family. We all need to take care of ourselves and each other, and to be on the lookout for signs and symptoms.
