Black History Month 2025
ASI’s Diversity & Inclusion Council proudly celebrates Black History Month, honoring African Americans and Labor, the theme for this years Black History Month.
Looking Back on Black History Month 2025
At Advertising Specialty Institute, we believe that diversity and inclusion are not just values to uphold but are also powerful drivers of innovation and connection. This February, we proudly celebrated Black History Month under the theme "African Americans and Labor," recognizing the profound impact of Black labor—whether free or unfree, skilled or unskilled—on shaping society, industry, and culture. Throughout the month, we engaged in meaningful conversations, explored creative contributions, and paid tribute to the resilience and innovation that define Black history.
Spotlight on Literature: Kyle T. Stokes and UrbanToons Inc.
Black storytelling plays a crucial role in shaping cultural identity and preserving heritage. On February 13, we had the privilege of hosting Kyle T. Stokes, founder of UrbanToons Inc., for a virtual presentation. Kyle shared his journey in creating multicultural children’s books that reimagine classic fairy tales in diverse settings. Through titles like Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Red Riding Hood, UrbanToons helps children from different backgrounds see themselves reflected in beloved stories.
Kyle’s discussion inspired attendees, shedding light on the importance of representation in literature and the impact of storytelling in shaping young minds. His passion for diversity and cultural awareness resonated deeply, leaving us with a greater appreciation for the role of books in fostering understanding.
We continued this celebration of literature on February 19, when Kyle joined us onsite as a vendor, offering his books and educational materials. Employees had the chance to explore his work firsthand, connect with his mission, and take-home stories that bring multicultural perspectives to life.
A Celebration Through Food: Black History Month-Inspired Menu
Food is a powerful storyteller of history and tradition. Our café featured a special menu inspired by African American cuisine, paying homage to the rich culinary traditions passed down through generations. The dishes reflected flavors rooted in resilience, creativity, and community—reminding us that food, like labor, holds a deep connection to history.
Looking Ahead
Each of these events served as a powerful reminder of the contributions African Americans have made—not only in labor and industry but also in literature, entrepreneurship, and culinary arts. Through storytelling, business, and cultural expression, Black labor continues to inspire progress.
As we reflect on this month, we are reminded that honoring Black history is not just about looking to the past—it’s about recognizing its influence on the present and championing its future.
Though Black History Month has come to an end, our commitment to learning, celebrating, and supporting Black voices remains strong. By engaging in conversations, amplifying diverse perspectives, and fostering inclusivity, we ensure that the impact of African American labor is recognized year-round.
